These are some of the questions we've been asked about sharing VisualCVs:

Does someone have to be a VisualCV member to view my VisualCV?

No, not at all. In addition to sharing your VisualCV with other VisualCV members (including professionals and companies), you can also share it with non-members.

How do I share my VisualCV with others?

The mechanism you'll use for sharing a VisualCV depends on its privacy setting. Tell me more about privacy settings

For example, if your VisualCV is set to "People I share with," you'll specify the individual or company you want to share it with via email. If your public VisualCV is set to "Anyone," you can include your member URL on your business cards or in your social network profile or email signature so anyone with an Internet connection can see your VisualCV. Where can I track activity for VisualCVs I've shared or received?

You can track activity for VisualCVs you've shared (and received) in a number of places:

  • On your VisualCV dashboard, the Shares section shows how many people have shared their VisualCVs with you, how many times you have shared your VisualCV with others, and how many times others have viewed your VisualCV. You get to your dashboard by clicking the You link at the top of any VisualCV page.
  • On the Professionals Directory page, the folders along the right side of the page show you share activity. You get to this page by selecting With Professionals from the Share menu.
  • The Views page shows you who has viewed your VisualCV. You get to this page by selecting Views from the You menu.
  • The VisualCVs Shared to You page shows you details about the people who have shared their VisualCVs with you. You get to this page by selecting Shares To You from the You menu.
  • Your Job Applications page shows you details about the job openings to which you have applied. You get to this page by selecting Your Job Applications from the You menu.

Tell me the good, the bad, and the ugly about changing my VisualCV's privacy setting to "Anyone."

OK. First, the benefits: The "Anyone" privacy setting means that your VisualCV can be viewed by, well, anyone. That means people can find your VisualCV by using a search engine, and you can use your VisualCV's URL on business cards, in your email signature, and on social networking and job board sites.

Now, the drawbacks: The "Anyone" privacy setting allows anyone to view your VisualCV—including harvester bots—just like anything else on the Internet that's public. In addition to personal information such as your home address and phone number, you may want to keep other information (such as your salary history) private until you are in deep discussions with a recruiter or employer who asks for this information. The most secure way to control who sees this information is to maintain two versions of your VisualCV—one with basic information you don't mind having public and another, more detailed one that remains private until a specific opportunity comes along. Can I just send someone a link to my VisualCV?

Sure! Your VisualCV's web address (URL) points to your public VisualCV. You can use your VisualCV URL on business cards, in your email signature, in social network profiles and job boards, and even on your own website to point others to your public VisualCV. Tell me more about my VisualCV URL

TIP: Before you use your VisualCV URL, be sure to change your public VisualCV's privacy setting to "Anyone" to avoid publishing a broken link. Tell me more about VisualCV privacy settings

To share a private VisualCV, you would share via email rather than use your VisualCV URL. Tell me how

I don't like the URL you gave me for my public VisualCV. Can I change it?

When you first joined VisualCV, we created a VisualCV web address (URL) for you that looks like this:

www.visualcv.com/rAnd0m

You can use this member URL on your business cards, in your email signature, or on other websites to point to your public VisualCV (if you've changed its privacy setting to "Anyone"). Tell me more about VisualCV privacy settings

You can change your URL at any time.Tell me how

What if I don't want anyone to see my VisualCV?

You have complete control over who can or cannot view your VisualCVs. To prevent people from seeing your VisualCV, change its privacy setting to "Only me." When you do this, nobody will be able to view your VisualCV until you change its privacy setting back to "Anyone" or "People I share with." Tell me how

Can I share just a part of my VisualCV?

You can't share just a part of a VisualCV. You can, however, make another version of the VisualCV that contains only the parts you want to share. The easiest way to do this is to copy the VisualCV and delete from the copied one the pieces you don't need for that audience. Tell me how to copy my VisualCV

How do I let people know I've updated my VisualCV?

Part of the beauty of an online VisualCV is that readers always see the latest and greatest version of your VisualCV (provided they are not looking at a saved PDF version). If you'd like to actively announce that you've updated your VisualCV, simply share the VisualCV with the individuals or prospective employers.

How do I stop sharing a VisualCV I previously shared with someone?

To stop sharing a VisualCV you previously shared with others, "unshare" the VisualCV with selected individuals. These individuals will no longer be able to view your VisualCV using the link we emailed them previously. Tell me more about unsharing my VisualCV

Note that unless you set your public VisualCV to "Only me," VisualCV members will still be able to view your VisualCV in the Professionals Directory even if you have explicitly unshared it with them, provided your "Allow Professionals..." display setting is set. Tell me more about display settings

Can I reciprocate or forward a shared VisualCV?

  • Folder - Add the professional to one of your folders (login required).
  • PDF - Open a PDF version of the VisualCV (good for saving or printing).

Someone else shared their VisualCV with me, but I can't view it. Why?

There are several possible reasons why you might not be able to view a VisualCV that someone has shared with you:

  • The person may have taken the VisualCV offline to make a last-minute change. Try contacting the person directly or wait a day or two and try again.
  • Maybe the person's job search is over and she wants to take herself off the market.
  • For whatever reason, the person may have decided to "unshare" the VisualCV with you. For example, maybe he updated his VisualCV with more sensitive information and decided to unshare it with people rather than create a new copy of it.
  • Maybe the person decided to cancel his VisualCV membership.

Why are people having trouble viewing my VisualCV?

You might have set your VisualCV's privacy setting to "Only me" to work on it and you forgot to change the setting back to "People I share with" or "Anyone." (The "Only me" setting prevents anyone else from viewing your VisualCV.) Tell me how to change my VisualCV's privacy setting

Can you suggest other ways to promote my VisualCV?

Sure! Another great way to get people looking at your new public VisualCV is to promote it with a "My VisualCV" button. You can use this button as part of your email signature, as a bio link on your blog page, as your discussion forum avatar, or anywhere you want to be noticed. Tell me how

Before you use your button in any of the places we suggested, remember to set your public VisualCV to the "Anyone" privacy setting. Tell me more about this setting

You can also add links to your VisualCV from other job services and social networking sites. Tell me how
